This workshop style briefing will ensure that you are up to date with the changes to RIPA and the IPA, and will guide you through a thorough review of current practice. You’ll look at currently published (and forthcoming) guidance and case law that affects the authorisation of Directed Surveillance and Covert Human Intelligence Sources (CHIS) in both RIPA and ‘non-RIPA’ situations. The briefing also examines the potential for ‘accidental CHISor Surveillance Agent’, how to handle unsolicited information from identifiable sources and how covertly watching a suspect’s online activities may be impacted by RIPA. The course also reviews the current process for obtaining communications data.
This briefing is suitable as an update for applicants or authorisers who haven’t been trained recently or as an overview for those who need a generalawareness of the law.
