Working within public body investigation means that if you want to carry out surveillance, or use a covert human intelligence source, you’ve got to get to grips with the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000 (RIPA). Given the media focus on surveillance, you’ll want to make sure that you and your organisation are doing it right.
In addition, you will be aware that there is increased scrutiny on the use of open source enquiries – from a Google search to trawling social media sites like Facebook. When does this open source work become Directed Surveillance?
Don’t get caught out : make sure that you know how to apply for directed surveillance and what to do when RIPA’s not available ; understand proportionality and necessity properly, learn about the RIPA (and non-RIPA) procedures and know how to oversee the application process properly.
